The handle is broken due to the passage of time.

In 1970 James Pratt Winston launched the Weltron 2001. It was an unusual design that could be both mains and battery operated. It was not cheap. It was a huge success, and was soon followed by the Weltron 2003 loudspeakers and other models sold under the slogan "New Shape of Sound".

Its design and name was reminiscent of the 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey". This model was also nicknamed "Space Ball". On the technical side, the Weltron 2001 includes the latest in technical advances. It uses the incipient 8-track tape format, which became very popular in the mid-1970s in the USA.
