This radio still works despite the passing of the years. It is an old Weltron radio, spherical, orange in colour and Space Age in style, model 2001. From the 1970s in the United States.
In 1970, James Pratt Winston launched the Weltron 2001. It was an unusual design that could run on mains power or batteries. It was not cheap. It was hugely successful and was soon accompanied by the Weltron 2003 speakers and other models sold under the slogan “New Shape of Sound”.
Its design and name evoked the 1968 film ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’. This model was also nicknamed ‘Space Ball’. In terms of technology, the Weltron 2001 included the latest technical advances. It uses the emerging 8-track tape format, which became very popular in the mid-1970s in the United States.
