An exceptional antique portable writing slope box dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, handcrafted from solid warm-toned wood with riveted brass corner mounts and fittings. The interior reveals a carefully organized layout featuring distinct compartments and a removable tray with ornamental carved woodwork designed to hold inkwells, quills, wax, and stationery. Historically carried by scribes and wealthy travelers for correspondence on the road, it includes a folding brass top handle and a front keyhole lock plate. Interestingly, the heavy brass corner brackets served a vital practical purpose, protecting the wooden casing from the rough vibrations of carriage and train travel during the period. Displays authentic signs of age, including a deep rich patina and minor surface wear consistent with historical use, noting that key is not included and, due to the passage of time, the lid fits slightly loosely despite closing in place. A magnificent centerpiece for executive desks, antique stationery displays, or collectors.
