This elegant precision postal scale is a vintage item manufactured in West Germany (W. Germany) by the renowned firm Westa during the mid-20th century (circa 1950-1960). Its main purpose was the accurate weighing of mail, letters, and small packages to determine postage rates in post offices or commercial offices. The device operates via a mechanical two-pan system (one deep circular pan and one flat rectangular pan) made of polished brass, resting on an ornamented central frame and a balance indicator pointer. The entire mechanism is built onto a robust, varnished hardwood base, which features a custom row of holes on top designed to hold its complete set of eight calibrated brass weights. Additionally, it incorporates a practical lower drawer with a spherical knob, originally designed for storing stamps, sealing wax, or additional desktop tools.
