The phonograph was invented in 1897 by Thomas Alba Edison, who later registered the trademark in order to market his products. Until then, other inventors had made devices that recorded sounds, but were unable to reproduce them. Edison's phonograph was the first to perform both functions.

The name Edison also appears in the elegant lettering of his logo, printed in gold on the front of the case. Again, the inventor's signature is engraved in the black lacquered metal of the mechanism, along with the words Trade Mark. The box that supports the device is made of solid oak wood, and the delicate tongue-and-groove joints that join the four sides are striking.

Cylinder box dimensions: 310mm, 375mm, 242mm.

Box dimensions: 227mm, 400mm, 303mm and the horn has a length of 350mm.
